Oddly I think it's more that a long history of visibility and advocacy paved the way for David Cicciline to become mayor. His sexual orientation while widely known and often rather crudely joked about by some of the entertainment media had pretty much little or no effect on the election. But then again once you're had Vincent 'Buddy' Cianci -- showman, visionary and now convicted felon -- as mayor for so many years, a gay man is not much of a leap.
